Here, villagers from Kallirachi would move whenever they saw pirates approaching the coastline. Being at the top of a steep cliff, they were able to protect themselves and their treasured belongings.

The hike passes through the village of Agios Georgios, which is part of the Rachoni settlement. You’ll love it for its dense and rich vegetation consisting of trees, olive trees, fruit trees, bushes, and shrubs. A visit to this tranquil spot will leave you feeling rejuvenated.

If you’re a beach lover, you don’t want to miss the Blue-Flag Beach of Dasilio. Paralia Dasilio, one of the quietest beaches in Thassos, has held a Blue Flag of Excellence since 2004. 

The fine sand and calm sea create a shallow and safe area, perfect for families with small children. Soak up the sun, take a refreshing swim, or simply relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

25. Visit Thassos historical sites and learn all about its rich history

Explore the history and beauty of Aliki Archaeological Site

The archaeological site of Aliki lies in a small rocky peninsula that was once a thriving marble quarry. And you can learn all about it while walking around the area, as there are many signs with detailed text and explanations. It will feel like walking around a museum, only without a roof but with the shadow of scattered pine trees.

Walk to the Akropolis in Thassos

If you feel a bit adventurous, do not miss a small hike to the top of the Akropolis in Thassos. A well-maintained path leads from the west side, passing through the ancient theater. Along the way, you will see lonely ancient temples and the ruins of the old wall, let alone the magnificent views over the old and modern city alike.

Explore the ancient Agora of Limenas

Right next to the archaeological museum of Thassos, you will find the entrance to the ancient market of Thassos. You will walk among ruins that date as far back as 600BC, while you will find several post signs to get a deeper understanding of what you see. As a tip, visit the Agora once you’ve been to the museum so that you can easier comprehend the glory of the ancient market.

Next to the old west walls of Thassos, you will find its ancient theater sitting inside a natural cavity of the hill that leads to Akropolis. Here, you will have a panoramic view of the old city and be able to recreate in your imagination the ancient plays and gladiator duels of the past. And if you are lucky, you may have the chance to attend a modern play and witness the supreme acoustics of the theater yourself.

Explore the ancient caves of Thassos

Thassos has a history that dates as far back as twenty millennia ago when the island was part of the mainland. During that time, our ancestors traveled to Thassos caves to collect ochre, which they used for painting and ceremonial reasons. You can still access some of these caves yourself, with Tzines Cave or Drakotripa in Panagia being the most famous. 

See the ancient temple of Dionysion

Surrounded by modern houses, Dionysion is a temple to the Greek God of wine that dates back to the 4th century BC. Although the site is now in ruins, imagine a 2-meter statue of the God with eight smaller sculptures around it. You can find the head and remnants of the monument in the archeological museum a few hundred meters away.

Embrace the local history and views from Evraiokastro

As you approach the northern side of the city, you will come across one of the most superb locations on the island. Evraiokastro has been the venue of an old Greek temple that gave way to an old Christian Basilica. Although you can still see the remnants today, what you will love is no other than the panoramic views over the Aegean and the mainland on the horizon.

Take in the views from the ruins of the Hercules Sanctuary

Right in front of the town hall, you will have the opportunity to witness one of the oldest and most visited ancient temples in Thassos. The Hercules Sanctuary was one of the most important temples for Thassians in antiquity. After all, both Phoenicians and Parians, who colonized the island, greatly loved Hercules.

Feel the Roman glory with a visit to the Karakalla Arch

The main path that leads from the ancient Agora to Heracles Sanctuary houses one of the most significant Roman artifacts in Thassos. The Karakalla Arch was once as high as 9.80 meters, commemorating the triumph of Roman Emperor Karakalla in Thrace. Today, the venue shows a sign of its past glory with several old marbles and inscriptions in a protected space near the old port.

See the 6th-century BC paintings of the Silen Gate

On the southern part of the modern city, you will find the remnants of the oldest wall sculptures in Thassos. The Silen Gate shows the mythological form of a Silen, a Greek creature of the wild, part beast, and part man. If you pay attention to the painting, you can notice its rich mop of hair above its horse-like tail.

Walk along the still-standing ancient walls of Thassos

Thassos has seen its tall walls destroyed and rebuilt multiple times during its history. Persians, Athenians, Macedonians, and other tribes forced the demolition of walls, which locals always rebuilt in a matter of years and sometimes reached even the height of 6-meters. You can still walk along a well-preserved part of the South Wall between the Silen and Zeus Gate.

Visit the Zeus and Hera Gate and get a grasp of past Thassian glory

In the southwest part of the old city, you can witness the remnants of the 4th-century BC Gate dedicated to Zeus and Hera. Its construction was a donation from a wealthy Thassian, when Thassos was a regional superpower in trade, thanks to its powerful fleet. Although now in ruins, the Gate still portrays important paintings and sculptures of the time, including one of Goddess Hera on her throne.

Take in the views from the Thimonia Tower

As you approach the beach of Alikes in southern Thassos, you will notice a hill that surrounds the bay. In one of its tops, you have the opportunity to witness the remands of a 6th-century BC tower, believed to have been the tallest in Thassos. Its job was to protect the marble queries in Aliki from land or sea raids from any direction.

If you’re looking for a slice of paradise, look no further than Astrida Thasos. Its crystal-clear waters and soft, golden sand make it the perfect place to relax and unwind. Take a leisurely swim in the calm waters or simply bask in the sun and soak up the tranquil atmosphere. 

Don’t miss the opportunity to visit the Astrida Beach Bar, which offers a wide range of drinks and delicious food. Sit back, enjoy the beautiful view, and let the sounds of the sea wash away your worries.

It’s worth noting that the bar in Astrida Beach does not allow visitors to bring their own umbrellas. However, you can easily rent one from the beach bar and make the most of your time on this stunning beach. So, grab your towel, sunscreen, and a good book, and get ready to experience the beauty of Astrida Beach.

Pefkari Thassos Beach is a haven for sun and nature enthusiasts alike. Its soft sand, gentle waves, and stunning sunsets make it the perfect spot to relax and soak up the sun. The beach is primarily sandy, with some pebbles, and the water is incredibly clear, inviting you to take a refreshing dip. 

For the more adventurous souls, water sports are also available, including paragliding, jet skiing, and fly bananas. Whether you want to unwind or seek excitement, Pefkari Beach has it all.

It’s no coincidence that Pefkari is one of the best beaches in Thassos!

28. Attend a fake Greek wedding in Theologos

Experience the joy and celebration of a big fat Greek wedding without actually getting married! Theologos offers a unique experience where visitors can attend a fake Greek wedding.

At the end of August, locals in Theologos organize the famous event of the Thassian Wedding. It is about a huge mock wedding celebration, whose preparations start weeks before. Other than its legitimacy, it is a proper Thassian wedding you would love to see from close. Let alone it is a great excuse to dance until early morning.

So, are you ready to dance to traditional Greek music, indulge in delicious food, and immerse yourself in the festive atmosphere? It’s an unforgettable experience that will leave you with memories to cherish. 

29. Swim through the Tripiti cave.

If you’re looking for adventurous things to do in Limenaria Thassos, embark on an underwater adventure and swim through the mesmerizing Tripiti cave. Located near the beach of Trypiti, this natural wonder is a paradise for snorkelers and divers. 

Dive into the crystal-clear waters and explore the intricate rock formations, hidden chambers, and vibrant marine life that inhabit this underwater paradise. Gliding through the cave, you’ll feel like you’ve entered a magical world straight out of a fairytale.

30. eBike to Apostolus Waterfall: exploring Thassos off the beaten path

Apostolus Waterfall is in northern Thassos, near the village of Kastro. This natural wonder is one of the most beautiful spots on the island. 

The waterfall cascades down a rocky cliff and into a crystal-clear pool below. It’s an excellent spot for swimming and picnicking, and the surrounding area is perfect for hiking.

The best way to get there is from Kastro. Although you can hike there in under one hour, I’d recommend that you rent an e-bike. The Mountain Cube e-bikes are flat-proof and can get you there and back comfortably while still giving you a workout if you wish.

You can now have the e-bike delivered to your accommodation or even to Kastro. So you can drive there, and the e-bikes will wait for you. Alternatively, you can join a Thassos e-bike tour through Kastro and Apostolus waterfall.

The Apostolus waterfall is amazing to visit all year round, especially during winter in Thassos, when the water levels are even higher. If that makes you consider the timing of your holidays, here are the best times to visit Thassos!

As you reach the waterfall, take in the cascading beauty and the tranquility of the surroundings. It’s the perfect setting to connect with nature and immerse yourself in the serenity of this hidden oasis.

As the day draws to a close, embark on a quest to witness Thassos’s mesmerizing sunsets from vantage points such as Klisma, Skala Maries, and Kazaviti. These scenic locations offer panoramic views of the island’s coastline, where the golden hues of the setting sun cast a spellbinding glow over the tranquil waters.

30. Visit the Monday Prinos market

For one of the best Thassos excursions, the weekly Prinos Thassos bazaar happens every Monday and is a bustling hub of activity.

Here, you can find various fresh foods from local producers and other vendors. The market offers a feast for the senses, providing countless Greek fruits and vegetables to cheese, honey, and olives to buy.

Take your time to wander through the stalls, sampling the delicious treats and soaking up the vibrant atmosphere. 

Here, you’ll find a plethora of stands offering various products, including an array of local delights such as olive oil, honey, and dried olives. Take the opportunity to stock up on fresh fruits and unique souvenirs to bring back home.

The Prinos market Thassos is also a great place to interact with the locals, who are always happy to share their knowledge and passion for the island’s culinary delights. Whether you’re a food lover or simply looking for a unique shopping experience, you should take advantage of the Monday Prinos.

31. Hike to Maries Lake: one of the best things to do in Maries Thassos

Embark on a scenic hike to Lake Marion, a hidden gem among the pine trees. You’ll stumble upon this tranquil oasis as you cross the village and venture towards the mountain. You’ll come across it while you e-bike to Ipsario, too!

The lake of Thassos is a beautifully landscaped recreational area, complete with kiosks and benches, where you can unwind and bask in the serenity of nature. Stroll along the lake’s edge, listen to the soothing sounds of the water, and let the peaceful ambiance wash over you.

32. Dine at Taverna Platana

While exploring Thassos, treat yourself to a delightful dining experience at the only cafe-restaurant in the village of Sotiras. The charming Taverna Platana is located in the square but looks like it’s nestled in a Greek forest isle. After all, tens of enormous plane trees surround it—no wonder the tavern offers a unique blend of serenity, hospitality, and culinary excellence. 

It’s the perfect place to escape the crowded tourist traps and indulge in authentic Greek island charm. The taverna prides itself on exceptional service, delicious food, and a fair price. As you dine, you’ll enjoy the cool breeze from the top of the mountain and have the opportunity to drink water straight from the spring.

33. Hike to Ipsario, the peak of Thassos: one of the best things to do in Potamia Thassos

For those seeking a more challenging adventure, a hike to Ipsario, the highest peak of Thassos, is a must. Standing at an impressive 1,204 meters, Ipsario offers sweeping panoramic views of the island and the surrounding Aegean Sea. 

The hike to the summit is a rewarding experience, taking you through lush forests and rocky terrain. Take a glimpse at the video below.

34. View the Dragon Cave: one of my favorite things to do in Panagia Thassos

For those seeking a bit of adventure and mystery, a visit to the Dragon Cave in Panagia village is a must. The cave is named ‘Dracotripa’ after a stalactite that has formed in the shape of a dragon. 

Make sure you have a good flashlight with you, as the cave is quite dark. The cave offers a cool and breezy respite from the summer heat. The road downhill from Taverna Elena to the cave is steep, but the journey is worth it. 

As you walk through the forest, you’ll come across blackberry bushes. After a 20-minute walk, you’ll reach the cave entrance. Step into the small and chilly cave and let your imagination run wild.

35. Enjoy a Sunset from the Port of Skala Kallirachi

Every sunset in Skala Kallirachi is a work of art, painting the sky with a mesmerizing palette of colors. Make your way to the port and find a comfortable spot to witness this natural spectacle. 

As the sun dips below the horizon, the sky transforms into a canvas of fiery oranges, soft pinks, and vibrant purples. It’s a truly magical experience that will leave you in awe of the beauty of nature. 

Remember to capture this breathtaking moment with your camera and create memories that will last a lifetime.

36. Relax at a cafe in Theologos.

Take a break from your adventures and unwind at one of the charming cafes in Theologos. Sit back, sip a cup of aromatic Greek coffee, and watch the world go by.

I love the Old Museum Cafe because of its friendly staff and beautiful vibes. It will feel as if you’re in a local’s garden! And if you feel like a snack, order a fresh pie with vanilla ice cream on the side. And don’t worry about calories. The Greek sun will take them away.

37. Spend time in Thassos museums to get a deeper understanding of its culture

Visit the archaeological museum

Located next to the ancient Agora, the internationally recognized archaeological museum of Thassos will give you a feeling of how island life used to be in antiquity. As you explore its interior, you will find a rich collection of invaluable archeological exhibits, ranging from pottery and jewelry to sculptures and statues. And once you step out of the museum, Thassos will feel a lot more alive.

See a traditional Thassos house in Kallirachi Folklore Museum

If you are curious to see how locals lived one to two centuries ago, make sure to visit the folklore museum of Kallirachi. Not only will you get an in-depth look into life in the 1800s and 1900s, but you will also have the opportunity to learn how past sailors used personal and professional items. After all, fishing and sailing have been the principal economic activities for the village during recent history.

Join cultural events in Kalogeriko

Right in front of the ancient port of Thassos, you will find the grand building of Kalogeriko, which houses multiple cultural events around the year. Check its calendar, and you may have the opportunity to witness anything from theatrical plays to cultural demonstrations. But even if nothing is on the calendar, you can still visit its interior and have a look into reproductions of old living quarters, workspaces, and kitchens equipped with traditional tools and furniture.

Within walking distance of Limenaria, Metalia is a white-sand beach home to an interesting open-air exhibition of artwork. Moreover, know that Metalia is a historical venue known for the mining activity by the German company Speidel in the 1900s. Today, it is a popular regional attraction and a gathering point for locals and tourists alike.

Thassos is full of historical monuments and interesting sights, but nothing compares to the work of a contemporary artist. And you have the opportunity to see several pieces of art made by the Thassian sculptor Polygnotos Vagis in Potamia. In his artwork, Vagis focuses on the wildlife and nature of Greece while he highlights the beauty of fish, birds, and starry skies.

Visit the interior of the charming Tarsanas Folklore Museum

In one way or another, your holidays in Thassos will pass by Golden Beach and Skala Potamia. And you cannot but notice the beautifully quaint building on the side of the bay overlooking the small fishing port of the village. There, you will find the Tarsanas Folklore Museum, which houses folklore exhibits and various cultural events during the summer.

If you would like to see how Thassians lived in the mountains two to three centuries ago, you don’t want to miss a visit to Theologos Folklore Museum. And you will even get to explore a special room dedicated to the art of the houses, including a local cloth-making machine.

Learn the rich history of olive oil in Sotirelis Olive Oil Museum

If there is one tree you will witness all over the island, that would be the olive tree. The history of olive trees on the island is blended with fascinating Thassos mythology, including tales from the era of Phoenicians. And to get a deeper understanding of it all, you would love a visit to the Sotirelis Olive Oil Museum in Panagia.

Explore a Traditional Olive Mill in Panagia

If you want to see how Thassians used to make olive oil more than a century ago, make sure to visit the Traditional Olive Mill in the mountain village of Panagia. It is a water-powered facility that presses olive and produces the famous Thassian olive oil Thassians have always loved. Although there are currently more efficient production methods, the olive mill is the last of its kind that still works in the entire country.

Enjoy the sight at the Crown of Limenaria

A short walk away from Limenaria towards Metalia beach, you will find a modern piece of art made by a team of German students in 2005. It is about a collection of twelve two-meter-long Thassian marbles that stand in a circle, reminding you of British Stonehenge. Although the Crown of Limenaria will be the reason for your visit here, don’t forget to embrace the panoramic views all the way from Limenaria to the settlement of Potos.

38. Explore the Mountain Village of Kastro

For a change of scenery, venture into the mountain village of Kastro on your third day in Thassos. As you wander through the narrow streets, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time. 

Above all, you’ll admire the traditional stone-built houses, narrow alleyways, and well-preserved architecture. Don’t forget to look for signs of the village’s long history.

Then, visit the Church of Agios Athanasios, a well-preserved medieval church with beautiful frescoes and religious art. You’ll find the church at the edge of the village, where you can climb to the top of the hill for panoramic views of the surrounding landscape and the sea.

Then, enjoy a traditional Greek lunch at one of the charming tavernas in Kastro. Savor local dishes and Mediterranean cuisine while taking in the quaint atmosphere.

After lunch, you have two options for exploring the Thassos mountains. If you’re up for a challenge, drive to the Apostolus waterfall and embark on a hike to discover its beauty. 

Alternatively, for a more unique experience, rent an e-bike and explore Thassos mountains on two wheels. You can even have the e-bikes delivered at Kastro or Limenaria for your convenience.

You can also join an e-bike tour from either Kastro or Limenaria, where a guide will lead you on an unforgettable adventure. That way, you don’t have to worry about all the sightseeing and driving since the guide will take care of everything.

39. Beach Hop on the East Coast from Limenas

If you’re staying in Limenas, make sure to explore the beautiful beaches of the east coast. Start with Makryammos Beach, known for its turquoise waters and lush surroundings. 

Then, make sure to visit Marble Beach, where you can sunbathe on the white marble rocks and take a dip in the refreshing waters. 

Finally, end your journey and relax on Golden Beach, a long stretch of golden sand and crystal-clear waters. 

You can visit all the beaches by car, but you’d spend a lot of time in the car since you have to backtrack from Marble. To avoid that and follow the dirt path along the coastline, rent an e-bike and hop from one beach to another, enjoying the sun, the sea, and the stunning scenery. 

You can have the e-bike delivered to your accommodation in Limenas the night before so you can start your adventure and exploration at your own pace and comfort.

40. Taste local wine in the Wine Cellar Museum

Discover local wine’s rich flavors by visiting the Wine Cellar Museum. The owner is known for his warm hospitality and offers samples of his exquisite wines. 

The prices for wine bottles are also very reasonable, making it an excellent opportunity to take some bottles home as souvenirs. 

The museum itself is a treat for wine enthusiasts, with its photos and artifacts showcasing the history of winemaking. Remember to enjoy the stunning mountain views from the terrace while savoring your wine.

41. Hike in Prinou Forest Olive

Escape into nature’s embrace by embarking on a scenic hike through the Prinou Forest Olive. This beautiful grove is home to ancient olive trees that have withstood the test of time. 

As you wander through the olive-scented air, you’ll feel a sense of tranquility and awe at the sheer magnificence of these majestic trees. Remember to capture breathtaking photos amidst the greenery, creating lasting memories of your time in Skala Sotiros.

To all fishing enthusiasts, here’s some insider info! Skala Maries is home to the ideal fishing spot, known as Plaka. As you cast your line, you’ll admire the breathtaking views and the unique sculpture of Madonna in the rocks. 

Enjoy the tranquility of nature while waiting for your catch of the day. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced angler, Plaka Fishing Spot is a must-visit for all fishing enthusiasts.

43. Trek in the pine forest of Dasilio

Start your day by strolling towards Dasilio, an area full of pine trees and stunning little beaches. 

As you walk along the elegant walkway alongside the main road, you’ll come across a small, charming, evergreen grove on the right edge of the bay. 

The peaceful atmosphere and the refreshing scent of pine trees will rejuvenate your senses, making it the perfect spot for a morning or sunset walk.

The liquors on offer are also worth a try. Treat yourself to a little piece of Thassos heaven at Kastro Tavern and bring back home some of the best Thassos souvenirs you’ll find.

Indulge in the yogurt with honey and walnuts, a delightful combination that will tantalize your taste buds. The food at Kostas Tavern is delicious and prepared with utmost care and authenticity. 

After your meal, engage in some brain-teasing games provided by Kostas himself. Immerse yourself in the warm hospitality and enjoy a truly authentic dining experience.

For a calm and peaceful beach experience, take a leisurely walk to Platana Beach. This hidden gem offers a serene and relaxing atmosphere, in contrast to the more popular beaches on the island. The sea here is sandy and shallow, perfect for a refreshing swim. 

The fine sand and smooth entrance into the water make it easy to enjoy the beach without any hassle. Take a moment to watch the sunset and marvel at the breathtaking colors of the sky. Platana Beach also features a beach bar where you can grab a beverage or snack, including sandwiches, salads, and smoothies.

For beach lovers, a visit to Agia Anna Beach is a must. This beautiful beach combines sand, clear water, and picturesque surroundings. Whether you’re in the mood for a leisurely swim or want to explore the underwater world with some snorkeling, Agia Anna Beach has it all.

47. Walk from Pefkari to Potos and hike in the nearby olive groves

If you’re up for a stroll and a touch of nature, take a ten to fifteen-minute walk from Pefkari to the nearby village of Potos. Potos offers a picturesque setting with its charming streets and traditional Greek architecture. 

As you wander through the village, you’ll come across beautiful olive groves that provide a scenic backdrop for a relaxing hike. Immerse yourself in the natural beauty of Thassos as you explore the olive groves and enjoy the serenity of the countryside.

48. Kefalogourna: The Waterfall of Theologos: one of my favorite instagrammable places in Thassos

Nature lovers will be mesmerized by the beauty of Kefalogourna, the waterfall of Theologos. Located near the village of Theologos, this stunning cascade is a sight to behold. As the water flows down the rocky terrain, it creates a magical atmosphere that will make your Instagram followers envious. 

Capture the waterfall’s power by taking a close-up shot or step back to include the surrounding lush greenery. Kefalogourna is a natural wonder that will make your Thassos Instagram feed stand out.

For even better shots, get your swimsuit ready and jump into one of the two pools for even better pictures. The water may be cold, but you’ll love how refreshing it feels and how many likes it will give on Instagram.

Feel the wind in your hair as you ride along the winding roads, taking in the breathtaking views along the way. The Apostolus waterfall and Kastro are truly magical places that will leave you in awe.

You can have the electric mountain bikes delivered to your accommodation, so all you have to do is cycle!

50.Kayak in Kefala area from Tripiti

For an unforgettable kayaking in Thassos experience, head to the Kefala area from Tripiti. Hop into a kayak and paddle your way through the calm waters, surrounded by the stunning natural beauty of Thassos. 

Explore hidden coves, secret beaches, and towering cliffs as you navigate this picturesque landscape. Keep an eye out for dolphins playing in the distance and soak in the serenity of this untouched paradise.

If you’re interested in geology, you’ll love the cave formations north of Tripiti Beach Thassos. These natural wonders have been formed over thousands of years and are a sight to behold. 

The caves are only accessible by boat or kayak and are perfect for exploring. I’ve visited them multiple times with my kayak from Tripiti Beach.

However, I’d recommend you get there by boat for more convenience. You can ask the captain to show you the way or rent your boat and explore at your own pace.

51. Admire Kefala Beach: the most beautiful beach in Thassos off the beaten path

Kefala Beach is a hidden gem on the west coast of Thassos. This secluded cove is only accessible by boat or hiking down a steep trail. 

The effort is worth it, though, as the beach is one of the most beautiful on the island. The crystal-clear water and the surrounding cliffs provide a stunning backdrop.

The beach is full of white pebbles, and despite its beauty, it’s almost always empty. Only a few boats pass by, letting tourists swim and spend time on the beach. 

My recommendation to reach Kefala Beach is to join a Thassos fishing boat trip from Skala Kallirachi. That way, you will get to visit this stunning shore while you spend time fishing and see how locals catch fish. 

Or, if your team is not into fishing, you can still join the trip and skip anything fishing-related! After all, you’ll be in a modern speed boat that can fit up to 10 passengers.

52. Shop Thassos products and art pieces to remember your Thassos holidays forever

When you arrive, take in the sheer majesty of nature as you witness the water cascading down in a graceful display.

Visiting Maries Waterfall Thassos is one of the most well-sought Thassos excursions and one of the best reasons to visit Thassos.

55. Drink water from the Spring of Platana in Sotiras

A visit to Thassos and Sotiras is not complete without experiencing the Spring of Platana. This marble fountain, marked as a preserved monument, is surrounded by towering plane trees and is home to some of the purest waters in Greece.

You can find it in the Holy Virgin Monastery between Maries and Skala Maries. Although the building looks more like a chapel than a monastery, it is an important religious site of the island.

In the northern part of Panagia, you will find the main village church dedicated to Holy Virgin. It dates back to 1831 when residents of Kastoria visited the island and erected the church with local funds and the support of the monastery of Vatopedi.

There, you will find the St. Athanasios Church, which dates back to 1804, when the Sultan gave locals permission to build a temple using the stone materials from the village walls. In the heart of modern Limenas, you will notice a stone church dedicated to St. Nikolaos. As a protector of sailors, the figure of St. Nikolaos is a loved saint for all Thassians, who relied heavily on the sea before the first signs of tourism. Drive to St. Panteleimon Monastery in the mountains

If you are curious to see a monastery deep into the mountain heartland of Thassos, then you would love St. Panteleimon Monastery. You can drive here following a rural road that connects the monastery with Kazaviti. Apart from the magnificent scenery all around, you will also have the chance to visit a sacred cave once visited by St. Panteleimon.

Follow the path from Limenas to the St. Dimitrios Church

If you reach the Silen Gate in Limenas, you can turn east and follow a dirt road into the woods. You will be walking under the shade of Akropolis until you reach a picturesque chapel dedicated to St. Dimitrios. There, you can enjoy the scenery around and sit down for a quick meal or picnic in a peaceful environment.

Close to the Theologos folklore museum, you will notice a charming stone church that cries for a photo. As one of the oldest churches in Thassos, it is made of tiles and stone, making it one of the most picturesque churches in Thassos. However, the highlight of your visit will be the moment you witness the unique wax icon of the Virgin Mary made by Apostle Luke.

Talk to the monk of the Assumption Monastery of the Virgin Maries

Discover the enchanting Monastery of Panagouda as you approach the village of Maries. On the left-hand side of the road, you’ll find this sacred place adorned with a priceless icon of the Virgin Mary and other relics.

Legend has it that the village originally stood where the monastery now stands but was later relocated to its current location to protect it from pirates. 

While there, immerse yourself in the site’s spiritual heritage by conversing with the Assumption Monastery of the Virgin Maries monk. The lovable Monk Epifanios dutifully follows the monastery’s rules and will gladly share the history and significance of the abbey. 

Listen to his words of wisdom and let their spiritual guidance inspire you on your journey. After all, you’ll be in a place of tranquillity and reflection where you can seek solace and inner peace. 

Then, get ready to view the site’s highlights. On the north side of the monastery, the chapel of John the Baptist- a true masterpiece- awaits you. Next, step into the serene Monastery of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, where peace and reverence fill the air. 

Marvel at the priceless image of the Virgin Mary and the exquisite chapel of “Timios Prodromos.” Also, don’t miss the fantastic church frescoes and the impeccably clean surroundings. Though the main church is dark, the iconography, especially St. Christopher as a dog, is worth the visit.

During this period, a Genovese family ruled over the island for 40 years. Jacob Gatelluzzi, a Genoan to whom Byzantine Emperor Emanuel II Palaiologus gave both Thassos and Lesvos islands in 1414, built the castle on the mountaintop where the village is located today.

To reach the mills, follow the main uphill road from the Platia. After a sharp left turn, a small path leads right. Follow this through the terraces to the edge of the forest. Here, we descend a steep trail to the mill. Following the stream, you reach a narrow place with an old dam.

The most spectacular and photographed spot on the island is no other than the circular lagoon of Giola in southern Thassos. What makes this lagoon so memorable is its proximity to the sea from where the water joins and exits. No matter how windy or wavy the Aegean is, Giola is always calm and invites you for a peaceful swim in an atmospheric setting.

Enjoy the peaceful setting around the artificial Lake Maries

You will find the only lake in Thassos in the island’s center. The locals made it to protect them from floods and provide a steady water source for their fields. Curious to see a site that carries a reputation of a wish-maker? Then, you would want to visit the three springs in Panagia, nicknamed the “Love Springs”. According to myth, local men come here to wish their wives to have boys. Even if you don’t feel I like making a wish, you could certainly enjoy a cup of coffee in the nearby cafe.

Take in the views from Palataki in Limenaria

Overlooking the seaside settlement of Limenaria, Palataki is a two-roof grand house built in 1903 by an Italian architect. It used to house the offices of the German company Speidel which was in charge of the iron factory in Metalia. Although the restoration work is still in progress, it is worth walking to it only to enjoy a scenic view of modern Limenaria.

Celebrate in the woods on the 17th of July in the St. Marina chapel. Near Kallirachi

As you drive from the seaside village of Skala Kallirachi to its mountain brother Kallirachi, you will notice a dense olive grove surrounding you. If you take a left turn to dirt road halfway to the village, you will reach the picturesque chapel of St. Marina, sitting in between tall olive trees. Although the location is worth checking out throughout the year, you should not miss a visit on its Saint day, the 17th of July, when a celebration takes place right into the chapel’s yard.

If you happen to visit Kastro Limenarion in January, make sure to participate in the yearly celebrations of Saint Athanasios. On the 18th of January, Greeks celebrate the village’s patron saint with a week-long celebration.

Hike from Theologos to Mount Ipsario

The most popular hike in Thassos starts from the mountain village of Theologos and leads to Ipsario. You will follow an 8-kilometer path that will take you through ever-changing scenery to the top of the island. And the views you will have along the way are one of a kind.

Follow the reek from Maries lake to the village

Although there is no proper path, you can still walk your way along with the reek that starts from the lake of Maries. Along the way, you will be walking in the middle of lush vegetation and a spectacular landscape. Since you may need to climb at one point, feel free to also return from the same path – after all, the journey itself is the destination here.

Hike from Kallirachi to Sotiras following a scenic route

You can start from the mountain village of Kallirachi and move your way to the neighboring settlement of Sotiras. Apart from enjoying the views along the way, keep in mind that you are walking a path that many locals used to take daily in recent history. After all, the mountain village of Sotiros initially was a colony of Kallirachi settlers.

Explore old Bridges in Thassos

One of the few signs of human intervention you will notice hiking Thassos would be the architecturally beautiful old bridges. Most of them are made of stone and used to link the village square with the nearest water source. You can find them in different locations, although most of them are in the area of Theologos and Kallirachi.

Hike from Potamia to Mount Ipsario

Although one of the most challenging hikes in Thassos, the path from Potamia to the top of the island will reward with a lot more than a spectacular landscape. The views you will have along the way are simply breathtaking. As you climb to the top, remember to occasionally turn your back and look at the bay around Golden Beach, which becomes smaller with your every step.

Explore old chapels in Thassos

No matter where you end up hiking in Thassos, you won’t be far from an old chapel. The church and locals have done a great job maintaining them in good condition. As a result, apart from the charming pictures you can take of the exterior, feel free to also enter the buildings and see the exciting work of local painters and sculptors.

Look for the Maries waterfall near the lake

As you approach the artificial lake Maries in the island’s center, remember that the lake is not the area’s highlight. Just next to it, you will find a path that leads to a small yet beautiful waterfall within a few meters. It is one of the most fantastic places in Thassos to relax under the shade and with the soothing noise of never-ending water dripping down from the waterfall.

Follow the scenic route from Rachoni to Limenas

One hiking route filled with such wonders is the trek from Rachoni to Limenas! Along the way, you’ll get glimpses of the picturesque village of Skala Rachoni and the stunning beach of Pachis!

Follow a breathtaking route from Skala Maries to Kallirachi

As you exit Skala Maries and turn towards Skala Kallirachil, you will see a dirt road leading to the region’s antennas on your right. Once you climb your way to the top, you can then turn right and follow the ridge towards the village of Kallirachi. As you walk the dirt path, you cannot but fall in love with the two 180-degree views, one from each side.

Hike from Limenas to Skala Potamia through Marble beach

Although this route is ideal to complete with a mountain bike, you can easily walk it. After all, it is a relatively flat path, especially if you compare it with other hikes in Thassos. Along the way, you will have the opportunity to take incredible pictures of the local coastline with the emerald waters all around.

Explore the Pine forest near Skala Prinos

If you would love to take a completely flat walk, look no further than visiting the Pine Forest near Skala Prinos. Locals also know the area as Dasilio, which means the little forest. You will walk between tall pine forests that span all the way to the settlement of Prinos.

Follow the short Poetry Tail to Kakirachi

Who wouldn’t love a short scenic route filled with tens of stop points to rest and read poems and writings carved on marble slabs? Rainer Maria Rilke and Goeth are two poets and writers whose work you will meet along the way. And did we mention the spectacular views you will have along the way? It is not by chance locals call this place the Balcony of Thasos.
