Are you visiting Panagia Thassos and want to know what you can do in the village? You’re in for a treat. Here are 23 things to do in Panagia Thassos so you never run out of activities in this fabulous Thassos mountain village.

Located on the beautiful island of Thassos in Greece, this village offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and warm hospitality.

Whether you’re a nature enthusiast, a history buff, or simply looking for a relaxing getaway, Panagia Thassos has you covered. So, put on your walking shoes and get ready to explore the charm of this enchanting village.

What You Need to Know About Panagia Thassos

Panagia Thassos is one of the most beautiful traditional villages on the island, built on the green mountain slopes above Golden Beach. It is named after the Virgin Mary, and the village church, Panagia the Pantovlepousa, remains an important part of local life and celebration.

What makes Panagia special is the way it combines mountain charm, local history, and natural beauty in one walkable village. As you wander through its narrow streets, you’ll see stone houses, slate roofs, small balconies, cobbled paths, flowing spring water, and shaded corners that feel completely different from the busy beach resorts below.

Panagia also has a fascinating past. After the Greek Revolution of 1821, it became the capital of Thassos for a period, and the village even had its own local currency called bakires, which you can still learn about through local church history and village stories.

If you are wondering what to do in Panagia Thassos, start slowly. Walk through the village, listen to the running water, visit the church, stop at the springs, enjoy a meal under the plane trees, and take in the views toward the sea and mountains. Panagia is not a place to rush through. It is one of those villages that rewards you when you give it time.

stroll around the village Panagia things to do

1. Stroll Around the Village

One of the best things to do in Panagia Thassos is simply to walk without rushing. The village still keeps much of its old Macedonian-style layout, with narrow lanes, sharp turns, stone houses, slate roofs, and balconies that almost seem to lean toward each other above the streets.

eBike through Panagia

As you wander, you’ll hear one of Panagia’s most charming details: running water. Natural springs and small water channels flow through parts of the village, bringing clear mountain water down through the streets and adding a peaceful sound to the whole experience.

Follow the water and let it guide you through the hidden corners of Panagia. You’ll pass shaded spots, old walls, small courtyards, flowers, and quiet alleys that make the village feel alive, traditional, and beautifully different from the beach resorts below.

2. Take a Photo at the Love Springs

One of the most charming things to do in Panagia Thassos is to stop at the Love Springs, a small romantic corner of the village with running water, a little bridge, shaded spots, and sweet details that make it perfect for photos.

The spring water adds freshness to the area, especially in summer, while the sound of the water makes the whole place feel peaceful and alive. Look for the bridge, the small water features, the heart-shaped details, and the little corners where the village’s natural charm really shows.

It is a simple stop, but a memorable one. Take a few photos, enjoy the cool mountain water, and then continue walking through the village as the water channels lead you deeper into Panagia’s narrow streets.

3. Hike Toward Potamia and the Ipsario Viewpoint

If you want a little adventure from Panagia, follow one of the walking paths above the village toward the mountain side and the views of Potamia, Golden Beach, and Mount Ipsario. You do not need to climb all the way to the peak to enjoy this area. Even a shorter walk can reward you with beautiful scenery, fresh air, and a completely different feeling from the beaches below.

Along the way, you may pass peaceful natural spots, pine trees, herbs, and small chapels such as Agios Nikolaos. As you look across the hills, you may also notice bright white areas in the distance. That is not snow, but Thassos marble, one of the island’s most famous natural materials.

If you are hiking with children or just want an easier walk, choose a short viewpoint route and return to Panagia. If you are more experienced and properly prepared, you can continue toward Potamia and even take on the famous Potamia to Ipsario trail. Just remember that Mount Ipsario is a real mountain hike, so bring good shoes, plenty of water, and avoid starting late on hot summer days.

4. Explore the Village Shops

No visit to Panagia Thassos is complete without browsing the small shops around the village. As you walk through the narrow streets, you’ll find souvenirs, handmade items, folk art, jewelry, natural products, local gifts, and small treasures that feel more personal than the usual last-minute tourist shopping.

Panagia is also a great place to look for products connected with Thassos itself. Olive oil, olives, honey, spoon sweets, herbs, wooden items, and simple handmade souvenirs all make lovely gifts to take home. The village is also home to the historic Sotirelis Olive Oil Mill, so local olive oil and olive-based products are especially worth noticing here.

Local Guide: Thassos Wonders

Take your time and don’t treat shopping as a rushed stop. Wander slowly, look inside the small stores, talk with local owners when you can, and let the village atmosphere guide you. After exploring, you can sit down for a meal in Panagia or continue your day with more of the best things to do in Panagia Thassos.

And of course, when you get hungry at the end of a long day of exploring, here are the best restaurants in Thassos and top wineries in Thassos!

Dragon Cave Thassos

5. View the Dragon Cave: one of my favorite things to do in Panagia Thassos

For those seeking a bit of adventure and mystery, a visit to the Dragon Cave is a must. The cave is named ‘Dracotripa’ after a stalactite that has formed in the shape of a dragon.

This is the wat to the Dragon Cave (Drakospilia)

Make sure you have a good flashlight with you, as the cave is quite dark. The cave offers a cool and breezy respite from the summer heat. The road downhill from Taverna Elena to the cave is steep, but the journey is worth it.

Dragon Cave Thassos (Drakospilia)

As you walk through the forest, you’ll come across blackberry bushes. After a 20-minute walk, you’ll reach the cave entrance. Step into the small and chilly cave and let your imagination run wild.

6. Taste the Specialty Lamb Souvles

Food is one of the best reasons to visit Panagia Thassos, especially if you enjoy traditional mountain-village cooking. One of the local specialties to try is souvles, which usually means lamb or goat slowly cooked on the spit until the meat becomes tender, juicy, and full of flavor.

This kind of meal fits perfectly with the atmosphere of Panagia. After walking through the village, visiting the springs, and exploring the narrow streets, sitting down for roasted lamb or goat feels like part of the experience, not just a lunch stop.

Pair it with a fresh Greek salad, local wine, handmade fries, or one of the village’s traditional spoon sweets afterward. If you want to taste the more rustic side of Thassos cuisine, Panagia is one of the best places to do it.

Golden Beach Thassos video

7. Drive to Skala Panagia and Golden Beach for a swim

For beach lovers, a visit to Skala Panagia Village is a must. This picturesque village is home to a few small Panagia Thassosl beaches that offer crystal clear waters and stunning views of the coastline.

One of the most popular spots is Golden Beach, with its long stretch of golden sand and turquoise waters. It’s the perfect place to soak up the sun, take a refreshing swim, or simply relax and enjoy the beauty of nature.

Golden Beach Thassos Creative

If you’re looking for a more secluded spot, head to the nearby Paradise Beach. This hidden gem is accessible via a steep road and hiking trail, but the effort is well worth it.

After all, both Paradise and Golden Beach are on the list of the best beaches in Thassos.

8. Taste a sweet at Smaro Traditional Pastry Shop

After a day of exploring and adventure, treat yourself to something sweet at Smaro Traditional Pastry Shop, also known as Lihnari Zaharoplasteio. This charming shop offers a variety of delectable desserts.

Don’t miss out on their specialty, Portokalopita, which is a pastry with orange syrup. Pair it with a cup of vanilla ice cream for the perfect combination of flavors.

The shop also offers a wide selection of other desserts, excellent coffee, and a complimentary glass of water. So, indulge your sweet tooth and savor the delightful flavors.

9. Admire the Three Springs Square

The Three Springs Square is one of the most beautiful little spots in Panagia Thassos. Located near the heart of the village, it is known for its clear, cold mountain water, old plane trees, and peaceful atmosphere that makes you want to slow down for a while.

The springs are part of what gives Panagia its special character. Fresh water flows down from Mount Ipsario and continues through the village in small channels, adding that gentle sound of running water as you walk through the streets.

This is a lovely place to stop for photos, especially if you enjoy traditional village corners rather than busy tourist sights. Nearby cafés and tavernas make it easy to sit down, order a coffee or drink, and enjoy one of the simplest pleasures in Panagia: shade, spring water, and village life passing by.

Take some time to explore these beautiful churches and chapels, each with its own unique charm and history. Light a candle and say a prayer at the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, located in the center of the village.

(PS. If you love what you see, check this guide on Thassos churches!)

14. Admire the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, also known as the Church of the Dormition of the Virgin, is a true gem in Panagia Thassos. While it is dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin, inside the church, you will find an icon of Panagia Pantoblepousa, dated 1814.

The church is not only a place of worship but also a place of art. The impressive frescoes and icons that decorate the interior of the church are a testament to the rich history and culture of the island. Take your time to admire the intricate details and immerse yourself in the spiritual ambiance of the church.

15. Partake in the Carnival celebrations

If you happen to visit Panagia Thassos during the carnival season, be sure to partake in the vibrant celebrations. On Pure Monday, also known as Ash Monday or Green Monday, a big feast is organized in the streets of Panagia.

Visitors and locals alike participate in the parade on makeshift chariots, celebrating carnival in frantic rhythms. Panagia is the center of celebrations for the carnival, and the carnival parades and performances are presented to the local people and tourists on the last Monday before Lent begins.

Join in the festivities, dance to the lively music, and experience the joyous spirit of the carnival.

17. Ask the locals why their predecessors built adjacent balconies

As you stroll through the narrow streets of Panagia, you will notice a unique feature of the village’s architecture—the adjacent balconies.

After all, the village retains the old Macedonian model of that period, with narrow streets, turns, and twists and with the balconies of adjacent houses almost touching.

This architectural design served a practical purpose—escape routes. During the pirate raids and the fear of invasion by the Ottoman Turks, the inhabitants could easily move from one house to another using these interconnected balconies.

Strike up a conversation with the friendly locals and ask them about the history behind this fascinating architectural feature.

18. Visit the Sotirelis Olive Oil Museum: one of the best things to do in Panagia Thassos

After a day of exploring and experiencing all that Panagia has to offer, head to the village square for some relaxation and people-watching. The village square is truly picturesque, with a huge plane tree at its center.

Visitors from all over the world gather here to sit, sip a Greek coffee or a cold beer, and enjoy the most wonderful of Greek pastimes—watching the world go by.

Stay Thassos Logo: the island of Thassos with an olive tree in the center
I am Dimi and this is a travel blog about Thassos Greece, my homeland. Although I grew up on this island for almost two decades, I decided to move and study abroad for six years. After Thassos, I lived in five different countries. During that time, I traveled to four continents and saw more places than I could count.

However, it was during the pandemic and my return to Thassos that I realized how lucky I am to call this island my home. And this blog is an effort to show you the beauty of Thassos. I hope you enjoy it :))
