Best Bike Routes in Thassos with Amazing Views
Here are some suggested routes if you rent an ebike from Thassos eBike Rental and you pick it up from the station at Studios Plaka.
Want the short answer?
Do Number 1, Number 3, and Number 7. They are the best, that’s why I included them in the printed map of Thassos!
If you can only choose one ride: here’s the breakdown:
- If you’re comfortable cycling in dirt roads, do Number 1.
- If you’re new to cycling & wanna see mountains, do Number 6.
- If you’re new to cycling & wanna keep it flat (+beaches), Number 4.
- If you want something short and nice in the mountains, do Number 5.
- If you want to cycle the entire coastline of Thassos (loop), do Number 2.
- If you want something as nice as Number 1 but more difficult, do Number 3.
- If you want something extremely challenging and yet insanely beautiful, Number 7.
This is the default route I recommend to all new clients who want to discover the mountains of Thassos and its beautiful villages.
You will start from my station through the olive grove and go to the mountain village of Kallirachi, from where you will cycle to the green village of Sotiras and then to my favorite mountain village in Thassos: Kazaviti.
That’s an awesome place for a snack or drink before you enjoy the downhill to Skala Prinos, where you will cycle on flat, quiet dirt roads among the olive groves before reaching Skala Kallirachi and loop back to Plaka.
LEVEL: Moderate
KILOMETERS: 39km
ELEVATION: 820meters
LINKS:
This is the most popular bike route in Thassos, and you can take it from anywhere. It’s 100 kilometers long and has around 1000 meters of altitude gain.
If you start from Studios Plaka, I recommend heading south so you’re on the right side of the road to enjoy the stunning views.
Taking a hybrid e-bike will also allow you to visit Marble Beach, cycling between Golden Beach and Limenas. This relatively flat dirt path is one of my favorite areas to cycle in Thassos!
And if you worry about the battery, don’t. The battery is more than enough, especially if you use Eco or Tour Mode. I’ll give you the charger, just in case.
LEVEL: MODERATE (google map link)
KILOMETERS: 103km
ELEVATION GAIN: 1050meters
This is my second favorite route, although, for many of my clients, it is equally beautiful.
You’ll start from my station, climb to Karachi through the olive grove, reach the infamous chapel of Kakirachi, cycle through a lush pine forest, get to a scenic viewpoint of south Thassos, and go downhill on the gravel road to Maries Lake & Waterfalls
Then, have a snack or drink at the traditional mountain village of Maries, enjoy the downhill to Skala Maries where you can find fresh fish, and even swim at a remote beach on the way back completing the loop.
LEVEL: Challenging
KILOMETERS: 47km
ELEVATION GAIN: 1000meters
LINKS:
One of the best beaches to visit from Thassos e-bike rental station is Salonikios beach. You’ll head south along the main road and then on smooth dirt path that leads to Salonikios Beach.
On the way there, stop by Atspas Beach in Skala Maries, have a drink in Linenaria, and enjoy lunch at the cosmopolitan village of Potos.
And most of all, don’t forget to stop by the stunning cave of Tripiti. It’s a there-and-back tour.
LEVEL: EASY (google map link)
KILOMETERS: 49km
ELEVATION GAIN: 420meters
If you want to go mountain e-biking but for something shorter than #1 and #2, I recommend heading first to Kallirachi village through the olive groves.
Once in the mountain village, go north along the dirt road to the sister mountain village of Sotiros, where there are only a handful of permanent residents.
Then go downhill to Skala Sotiros and enjoy the picturesque seafront village with its beach. Finally, explore the surrounding flat and smooth dirt roads in the Prinos olive groves before you head back to the eBike station.
You can also make this route even shorter by skipping the olive grove detour and heading straigt back to the station. This will save you 10 kilometes which brings down the ebike route to only 19 kilometers!
LEVEL: Moderate
KILOMETERS: 29km (or 19km)
ELEVATION GAIN: 550meters
LINKS:
One of the best and easiest eBike routes in Thassos is getting to the peaceful and unique lake and waterfalls of Maries.
You can start from the e-bike Rental Station and head south towards Skala Maries. Once there, leave the main road and follow the paved path to the mountain village of Maries.
It’s uphill but the battery will help you go easily while enjoying the surroundings. In Maries, take a break at a local tavern and then take the smooth dirt road to the artificial lake of Maries.
You’ll find the biggest waterfall below the lake and then 3 more smaller but still beautiful waterfalls above the lake.
LEVEL: EASY (google map link)
KILOMETERS: 47km
ELEVATION GAIN: 580meters
Prepare for one of the most insane and challenging ebike route in Thassos! Yes, it’s hard (1422 meters elevation) and long (54.1 kilometers), but it is worth every bit of your efforts.
Trust me. The moment you reach the relatively flat section in the middle of Thassos, cycling with spectacular views on both sides is the best mountain treat you’ll get for a long time.
It’s 7 more kilometers than number 2, one level up in difficulty, this time going deep into the mountains and coming back through the mountain villages of Agios Georgios and Skala Rachoni.
In the mountains, you’ll be in the interior of the island with great views and some picturesque chapels plus you’ll pass by the second biggest monastery in Thassos: Agios Panteleimon above Kazaviti
In Agios Georgios there is a famous wine museum and wine tavern too. It’s the best reward before the descend to the olive groves of Skala Prinos and Skala Sotiros, where you can also swim in a remote or sandy beach!
LEVEL: Expert
KILOMETERS: 54km
ELEVATION GAIN: 1422meters

Top 7 short ebike routes from eBike Rental Station- Weekly Challenge
In the begining of 2024 May, someone challenged me into documenting every single ride I do for a week. You see, May is the time I kind of never miss a day on a bike in the mountains or the hills above Plaka.
After a busy summer, I finally got to collect all that recording and put it into a list of 7 reccommended ebike routes from Plaka.
It’s a perfect recommendation list if you’re staying in Studios Plaka and feel like a short ride before dinner.
With one exception: tour number 7 is not short. At all.
TOUR 1 Goat Loop eBike Tour for Bike Rent Thassos Monday Challenge by Thassos eBike Rentals
This is one of my favorite short ebike routes from our station. You get to climb to Kallirachi village through the olive groves:
Then from the village you follow a paved secondary road that is the ring road of Kallirachi:
You turn left on the first dirt road that leads to Kakirachi hill and before that, you turn right. That’s the highest point you will get and after that all the more fun begins!
You go downhill toward Skala Kalliraci via this scenic path:
Be aware that this is an expert level downhill so you need to either go very slow or have some experience to follow the rythme in this video:
Tour 2 Racket Loop eBike Tour for Bike Rent Thassos Tuesday Challenge by Thassos eBike Rentals
This tour (Racket Loop) is a fun short ebike route that goes into the olive groves about Studios Plaka and turns back right before the village of Kallirachi.
On the way, you get to see beehives:
glimpes of the mountain village:
and enjoy scenic views of the Aegean below:
Here is the top point you will reach:
and here is a video of the tour:
Tour 3 Old River Loop eBike Tour for Bike Rent Thassos Wednesday Challenge by Thassos eBike Rentals
The weekly challenge continues with another short loop above the olive trees of the Thassos eBike Rental Station:
As you can see on the Youtube short above, this time the downhill is through a secondary paved path that connects the taverns of Klisma to the mountain village of Kallirachi.
In the beginning, you have the beautiful views of the houses from afar:
cycling uphill through dirt roads among olive trees:
and since I made this tour late right before sunset, I got to see the sunset on my way down to the Thassos bike station:
the tour is called Old River Loop because the paved downhill runs on the side of an old river in the area, which is now barren and full of olive trees:
and here is a video of the entire ride:
Tour 4 Ring Loop eBike Tour for Bike Rent Thassos Thursday Challenge by Thassos eBike Rentals
On day 4 (Thursday), I got lazy and only did 4 kilometers or so. Again I headed to the hills above Plaka:
I still got glimpses of the mountain:
but then quickly turn back to the paved secondary path to head at the bike station:
This was essentially a short version of the Old River Loop but going downhill also on an interesting dirt road that I love to cycle in:
Tour 5 Paved Loop eBike Tour for Bike Rent Thassos Friday Challenge by Thassos eBike Rentals
Friday is officially the second half of the challenge so I celebrated with a longer but still easy route.
You will go uphill along the old river on your right and the mountain village backdrop:
Then go down through the paved road that connects Skala Kallirachi and Kallirachi village:
and here’s a short video of the scenic downhill to Skala Kallirachi:
Once you reach the village, you will enjoy cycling along the port:
which you can see in the video below is quite some fun:
and then return to the eBike Rental Station at Studios Plaka through mainly secondary paved roads:
And here’s a video of the route:
Tour 6 Port Loop eBike Tour for Bike Rent Thassos Saturday Challenge by Thassos eBike Rentals
The Saturday tour may look longer, but it’s not. It’s actually a preparation for the craziness of the tour that is coming tomorrow.
In this port loop, you’re essentially visiting Skala Kallirachi village through mostly secondary roads and touring the area.
I got to do the tour at sunset so I had those awesome views along the way:
and the scenery was similar in the port:
which I also made a short video showing how beautiful Skala Kallirachi is:
You will also get to see the local church:
And here is the whole video tour of the tour:
Tour 7 Antennas Loop Highlights eBike Tour for Bike Rent Thassos Sunday Challenge by Thassos eBike Rentals
And there comes Sunday, the day of rest. Which in our case is not so restful. Especially since my friend and I wanted a workout and did the entire 1000-meter-elevation climb in normal mountain bikes!
Here are our bikes at the peak:
But before we got there, we started cycling around 5pm along the coastline toward Skala Maries:
We had nice views of the ocean and the remote Thassos beaches on the way:
Right before Skala Maries, we headed inland toward the Antennas, one of the tallest peaks of Thassos.
The way back is challenging and technical, so only if you’re up for the challenge and comfortable on steep descents. Of course, ebikes are a great help which we should have utilized (thinking in retrospect)
Here are some glimpses of our way up:
After 90 minutes of pure sweat, we managed to get to the top with only 3 short 5-minute breaks.
Here is what we got to see from the peak:
After we enjoyed the peak for a bit, we headed down eastward to Kallirachi village. There is a section that you may have to walk down (unless you’re super expert).
We aren’t on that level so we walked but then reached my most favorite section to cycle in Thassos!
Imagine being on a ridge where you cycle with unobstructed views 1000 meters below on both sides: in our case Kallirachi-Soritos Bay in our left and Limenaria-Potos Bay in our right.
Actually, you don’t have to imagine. Just watch this video:
And yes, although that’s the highlight of the tour, the real fun starts right there and finishes at the eBike Renntal Station.
All the way until there, you will be going downhill 95% of the time!
And you will the most memorable views on the way. Here are some pics from the downhill:
We happened to be close to sunset so we had the most amazing views:
Here are some highlights of our tour:
And here is another time I went down that hill with a friend from Serbia who was way faster than I usually am, so that helped with the video duration 😉
